Your Annual Notice of Change: what to look for

Your plan mails it by September 30. It lists everything that changes on January 1, and it is easy to put in a drawer. These are the parts worth reading.

  1. Your monthly premiumIs what you pay each month going up, going down, or staying the same?
  2. Your doctors and hospitalsIs everyone you see still in the plan’s network next year? Networks change more often than people expect.
  3. Your medicinesIs each one still on the drug list? Watch for a new tier, a higher copay, or a new approval rule before the plan will pay.
  4. Your pharmacyIs the pharmacy you use still in the network, and still one of the lower-cost ones?
  5. Copays, deductibles and the yearly maximumWhat a doctor visit, a specialist and a hospital stay will cost you in 2027, and the most you could pay in a year.
  6. Dental, vision and hearingExtras can be added, cut back or dropped from one year to the next. Check the ones you actually use.

Does your notice say your plan is ending? That is a separate letter, called a non-renewal notice. You will need to choose new coverage, and Darel can help you do it in time.

Common questions

I never got a notice. What should I do?

Call the member services number on the back of your plan card and ask for your Annual Notice of Change. Or come to your review without it: Darel can go through the changes with you.

What happens if I do nothing?

In most cases your plan renews on January 1 with its new costs and rules. That is why it is worth reading the notice first.

Does the review cost anything?

No. Our help is at no cost to you. If you enroll in a plan, the insurance company pays Darel. Your premium is the same whether or not you use an agent.

Do I have to switch plans?

No. If your plan still fits, Darel will tell you to keep it. Staying put is a perfectly good outcome.
