When a Medicare Advantage plan ends: what happens

Plans that are leaving mail their members a letter, called a non-renewal notice, in October. Here is the timeline, and what happens if nothing is chosen.

The dates that matter

  1. Early OctThe letter arrivesThe plan mails its non-renewal notice to members.
  2. Oct 15Open Enrollment opensMembers can choose a plan for 2027.
  3. Dec 7Open Enrollment closesA plan chosen by this date starts January 1.
  4. Dec 31The plan’s last dayChoose by now to avoid a gap in coverage.
  5. Jan 1Original Medicare onlyFor anyone who didn’t choose. Drug coverage ends too, if the plan had it.
  6. Feb 28Special window closesMembers of a plan that ended can choose a new plan until this date.

If nothing is chosen

  • On January 1 the member has Original Medicare only.
  • If the plan included prescription drug coverage, that coverage ends too.
  • Going 63 days or more without drug coverage can mean a late penalty for as long as someone has Medicare drug coverage.
  • For 63 days after the plan ends, certain Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans can be bought without health questions.

What to have ready for the call

  • The letter saying the plan is ending, if you have it
  • Your red, white and blue Medicare card, and your plan card
  • The names of your doctors
  • Your medicines, with the dose and how often you take them
  • The pharmacy you use

Common questions

Which plans are ending in my county?

It is different in every county. Darel checks yours during the call, along with which 2027 plans include your doctors.

What happens if I do nothing?

On January 1 you would have Original Medicare only, and drug coverage ends if your plan had it. You can still choose a plan until February 28, but every month without one is a month without that coverage.

Can I keep my doctors?

That depends on which 2027 plans include them. Checking that is the first thing Darel does.

Does the help cost anything?

No. Our help is at no cost to you. If you enroll in a plan, the insurance company pays Darel. Your premium is the same whether or not you use an agent.

Are you connected with my plan or with Medicare?

No. Darel is an independent licensed insurance agent. He is not connected with the government, the Medicare program, or any plan that is ending.
